The French 75 cocktail recipe is a relic with a history and only 4 ingredients: gin, fresh lemon juice and simple syrup. The name is said to have been inspired by the 75mm Howitzer field rifle used by American and French forces in World War I. The story goes (according to every Google search twisted every which way) is the drink held such a kick that it was like being shelled by that firearm.
That’s one strong drink, I’d say.
It’s actually refreshing to me with the bright combination of gin and lemon. But I’ve never found myself on the wrong end of a 75mm, so what do I know.
The suggested glassware for the French 75 cocktail is a collins or highball glass. I picked these glasses up from Walmart and have fooled more than a few with their weight and quality.
SERVING SUGGESTION:
The crispness of the fresh lemon juice and gin make a nice introduction to a heavier dinner. Serve with a light appetizer and let your meal be the star of the evening.
ABOUT THE CHAMPAGNE:
Prosecco or Cava work well, too. Try to stay on the dry end or it may be a little too sweet. But play with what you like. Do you.
SIDENOTE:
Hendrick’s Gin is our go-to for a quick gin & tonic. Have you every looked at their website? I want to step inside it. It’s cozy, homey, warm…informative and entertaining. All the things that make me like it even more. And who knew their original gin is infused with rose and cucumber?! I did not, but now that I know I kinda want to drip into my bath water.
Recipe:
1/2 ounce Simple Syrup*
1/2 ounce fresh lemon juice
1 1/2 ounces gin
Champagne or other sparkling wine
Over ice, pour syrup, lemon juice and gin. Stir. Fill glass with champagne. Garnish with lemon zest.
*Fresh Simple Syrup is equal parts water and sugar; melt the sugar in the water, let cool and roll.
